This is up there with the lawyer who appeared on Zoom with the cat filter! Things got a bit sticky for a lawyer when he decided to use ChatGPT as co-counsel.

The lawyer was representing a chap suing the airline Avianca claiming he was injured when a serving cart struck his knee during a flight.

The lawyer submitted to the court a 10-page brief that cited more than half a dozen relevant court decisions. But the judge couldn’t find the cases.

That was because ChatGPT had invented everything.

The tech world calls this the AI “hallucinating”. I call it the “Pinocchio Effect” – except at least with Pinocchio you could tell when he was lying as his nose would grow – not so with ChatGPT.

I gave a session to lawyers last week on AI & the Law. 94% thought AI would significantly change their practice. If you would would like to master AI tools like ChatGPT & grow as a legal leader & innovator in your organisation, join the Bond Uni Breakthrough Lawyer online course. Targeted at in-house and private practice lawyers. Intake limited to 30 lawyers. If you are constantly “time-poor” or need to do “more with less”, now could be the time to invest $975 in this course.
